Where to Buy Macrame Supplies in Australia

One of the more common questions I get asked is where to buy macrame supplies. Especially since I sell digital PDF patterns, people want to know where they can get the particular macrame cord and accessories I use. So I thought I’d create a blog post of the suppliers I use, the suppliers who I know stock the same cord and accessories as I use, and other reputable suppliers.

At the time of writing I am in no way receiving any incentive for recommending these suppliers. So rest assured, I’m recommending them purely because I have had good experiences with them, and I want you to have the best start to your macrame journey.

Why is it important to find a good supplier?

The quality of macrame cord you use can effect your entire macrame experience. If you find yourself unfortunate enough to have bought cord from a not-so-great supplier, you could find yourself breathing in chemical smells wafting from the cord, working with not-so-soft macrame cord, or producing finished pieces that don’t stand the test of time.

And then there’s the ethical considerations of supporting fair work practices and businesses that see sustainability as an important aspect of their daily activities.

If you run a small macrame-related business it’s also important to find a supplier that is dependable, quick to ship products, and offers competitive pricing. Your source of macrame cord and accessories can really make or break your business.

Things to consider when looking for a macrame supplier

    • Type and diameter of macrame cord available

    • Range of cord colours on offer

    • Lengths of cord available

    • Quality and range of accessories

    • Whether they offer bulk buy/wholesale discounts

    • Shipping locations, timeframes & cost

    • Whether sustainability and fair work practices are promoted

My top 5 suppliers of macrame cord and accessories

As I’m located in Australia, all of the macrame suppliers mentioned below are based in Australia or New Zealand. Luckily for those of you who live on other continents, some of these suppliers do ship internationally (which I’ll mention in the write up).

A range of macrame supplies, including wooden rings, beads, and fob keychains.

Knot Knitting is my top choice at the moment as Catherine and Nikki stock the exact type of cord and accessories I use in my patterns, offer quick delivery, and offer discounted prices for buying in bulk. They’re based in Geraldton, Western Australia, and will ship both Australia-wide and internationally (sales prices are generally not available for international buyers).

Knot Knitting has an expansive range of macrame cord from 1mm right up to 20mm. One of my favourite things about their shop is many of the 5mm colours are available in 2.5kg rolls, which means more bang for your buck when sourcing macrame cord for a small business.

If you send them a message and let them know My Mum the Dreamer sent you, they’ll also give you some pretty sweet wholesale prices for your small business.

BEST FOR: Small businesses and dedicated makers who make multiple projects. Also an option for those who live internationally.

Pacific Knot is a Perth-based business run by Cassandra. I haven’t actually purchased anything from Pacific Knot, but I do know they stock all of the macrame cords I use in my patterns and ship Australia-wide.

However, this wouldn’t be a one-stop shop if you’re looking to purchase everything required for my macrame patterns as many of the accessories I use aren’t stocked.

My favourite thing about Pacific Knot is that you can purchase 20m lengths of many cord sizes. This is fantastic for those hobby-makers who only want to make small projects as you can take home a range of colours without having to purchase the entire rolls.

BEST FOR: Those wanting to make a one-off project or purchase smaller lengths of colours.

While Mary Maker Studio doesn’t stock the exact type of cord and accessories I use in my patterns, Brydie and her team definitely deserve a mention in the top 5 suppliers. I purchased the Neo pattern from Mary Maker Studio quite early on in my macrame journey – the pattern is so beautiful and I learned a lot from Brydie’s tips.

I can’t speak too much about the cord and delivery times of Mary Maker as, to date, I’ve never ordered anything physical from the shop. But I’ve admired many of the unique cords and accessories available and will most definitely be purchasing some of their gorgeous hand-painted string sometime in the near future.

Mary Maker is another option for my international readers as they ship worldwide.

BEST FOR: Makers searching for hand-painted string and other unique fibres for their projects. Another option for those who live internationally.

Knotting Hillbilly is another shop on the list that I haven’t personally ordered from. However, they do stock the recycled macrame cord that I use in my patterns. The accessories are a little different to the ones I use, but will still do the job.

Knotting Hillbilly posts to Australia and New Zealand. The website also mentions if you contact them with a screenshot of your intended order, a quote can be given for international shipping.

Some of the items that caught my eye were the 1kg bundles of macrame cord – so you can purchase multiple cord colours without having to buy a kilogram of each. Also the heart-shaped swivel clasps in the New Products section look super-cute!

BEST FOR: Those wanting to place smaller orders and still receive multiple cord colours. A third option for those who live internationally.

At the time of writing Junebug Creationz wasn’t taking orders, but I thought I’d include Jade’s shop for when she reopens. Junebug Creationz will always have a special place in my heart because this was the first place I ever bought macrame cord and I had many a long-chat with Jade during pickups. She has recently moved back to New Zealand, which is lucky for anyone who lives there!

Junebug Creationz stocks a fairly wide range of macrame cord and accessories. Most cords are available in both small macrame balls as well as the large 1kg rolls. Macrame accessories are available in singles as well as larger discounted quantities. I find Junebug Creationz caters well to those wanting to complete smaller projects or try lots of different cord colours without outlaying lots of cash for the 1kg rolls. Of course she also caters to more-avid makers with the bulk-buy discounts offered.

BEST FOR: Makers living in New Zealand.
